Here’s something most SEO reporting tool lists won’t tell you.

The tool that produces the most beautiful report isn’t always the one that keeps clients. The tool that helps you explain why traffic dropped — in plain language, in five minutes, without a spreadsheet — is the one that keeps clients.

I’ve run 120+ SEO campaigns across agencies, solo consulting, and in-house teams. I’ve presented reports to e-commerce founders, SaaS CEOs, local business owners, and enterprise marketing directors. What I’ve learned is that most SEO reporting tools are built for SEOs. The best ones are built for the people SEOs report to.

The client sees your branding. You spend twenty minutes reviewing instead of three hours building.

What it does genuinely well:

The drag-and-drop report builder is the most intuitive I’ve used. You can build a custom report template in under an hour and clone it across every client with minor adjustments. The automated delivery means reports go out on schedule whether you remember or not.

SE Ranking earns its place on this list because it does something no other tool here does: tracks AI Overview visibility, traditional organic rankings, and local pack positions — and surfaces all three in the same client report.

That’s the right approach for 2026. Your client ranking at position 2 organically while an AI Overview absorbs 40% of clicks for their main keyword is a story that needs to be told together. SE Ranking tells it.

What SE Ranking does better than most:

White-label reports are genuinely good at this price point. Branded client portal, custom domain, custom color scheme, custom logo — all available without jumping to an expensive enterprise tier.

Looker Studio (formerly Google Data Studio) is free and infinitely customisable. The catch is that it requires someone who can build it — and building a genuinely good Looker Studio SEO report from scratch takes 10–20 hours the first time.

For agencies with that technical capacity, it’s the most powerful option on this list. You connect Google Analytics, Search Console, Google Ads, and third-party APIs from Ahrefs, SEMrush, or SE Ranking. You build the report structure exactly the way you want it. You use it forever at no cost.

The templates available in the Looker Studio gallery mean you don’t always start from zero — good SEO report templates exist that you can clone and customise in a few hours rather than building from scratch.

The honest limitation: Looker Studio doesn’t think for you. It doesn’t surface anomalies or explain what happened. It shows data. Making that data meaningful for clients requires the SEO doing the thinking — which is either a feature or a bug depending on your workflow.

Where it falls short: No native AI Overview data. No built-in insights layer. High setup time. Not appropriate for agencies wanting automation without technical investment.

My recommendation: Best for technical teams who want full control and zero ongoing cost. Not the right starting point for agencies that want to get reporting done quickly.


5. SEMrush — Best for agencies already using SEMrush for SEO work

SEMrush’s reporting is most valuable when you’re already using it for keyword research, site auditing, and competitive analysis — because everything is connected.

The My Reports feature lets you build custom PDF reports pulling from any SEMrush data source. Branded, scheduled, and automated. The PDF quality is professional and the data depth is unmatched for competitive reporting — showing clients exactly where they sit against competitors on every keyword cluster.

The AI-generated performance summaries added in 2025 write the narrative section of reports automatically, in plain language. Reasonable quality for a first draft that you edit before sending.

Where SEMrush reporting falls short: The best reporting features — white-label, client portal, advanced scheduling — are locked behind the Business plan at $499/month. At Pro or Guru level, reporting is functional but not as seamless as AgencyAnalytics. And SEMrush backlink data updates daily versus Ahrefs’ near-real-time, which means link-building reports can lag.

My recommendation: Worth using for reporting if you’re already on SEMrush. Not worth upgrading to SEMrush solely for the reporting — AgencyAnalytics gives you better reporting automation at lower cost.


6. Ahrefs — Best for backlink and competitive data in reports

Ahrefs isn’t primarily a reporting tool but the Portfolio view and scheduled report exports make it the best source of backlink reporting data available.

For clients where you’re actively building links, showing them a monthly report of new referring domains, domain rating changes, and lost link alerts is clear evidence of work being done. No other tool gives you this data at Ahrefs’ freshness level — the near-real-time backlink index means you’re showing links that appeared this week, not links discovered last month.

The Brand Radar feature — tracking your client’s mention in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot responses — is genuinely valuable reporting data for clients asking about AI visibility. Still developing but already more useful than most AI tracking tools.

Where it falls short as a reporting tool: Ahrefs doesn’t build client-ready reports natively. You’re exporting data and incorporating it into another tool’s report rather than generating from Ahrefs directly. For reporting purposes, feed Ahrefs data into AgencyAnalytics or Looker Studio rather than sending Ahrefs screenshots.

For AI Overview reporting specifically: Search Console now has a filter for “Search appearance: AI Overviews” in the Performance report. This shows you which queries are generating AI Overview impressions for your client’s pages — the most accurate picture of AI visibility available anywhere.

The honest limitation: Search Console is not a reporting tool. It’s data infrastructure. You need a layer on top of it (AgencyAnalytics, Looker Studio, SE Ranking) to turn the data into a client-facing report.

My recommendation: Connect it first. Build reports on top of it second.
